They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Well! in this case, a GIF has turned out to be just that. World's youngest Nobel laureate and girls education activist Malala Yousufzai, on Saturday, responded to the criticism directed at her after her recent interview with British Vogue went viral on social media.

The young UN Messenger of Peace chose to hit back at her haters using an "Elmo on fire" GIF, encompassing her feelings and those of her supporters. The message is subtle, appropriate, and a reflection of the wittiness of a genius that she is.

This 'Elmo; the muppet' GIF has all the ingredients of a perfect comeback; it is humorous; it pretty much sums up the situation; it is laid back. And it conveys the perfect message i.e. she is unbothered.

This response came after the young activist faced not only harsh criticism from social media users over her remarks about marriage in the aforementioned interview but also the political establishment. Her comments reached the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly on Friday with members of the opposition urging her family to clarify their position on the issue.

In the interview, when asked about her views on marriage, the 23-year-old Oxford graduate had responded that she is wary of the institution:

“I still don’t understand why people have to get married. If you want to have a person in your life, why do you have to sign marriage papers, why can’t it just be a partnership?”

While these may be the views of a young girl struggling with the idea of marriage just like any other young person out there, her positionality and stature put her in an awkward position with social media users twisting her words and holding her responsible for...having opinions and being able to share them.

If anything, her response would show haters their place and how little their opinion matters.
